The Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers a wide range of courses in both pure and applied mathematics and statistics. These meet the needs of students who wish to major in mathematics or statistics as well as those who require some knowledge of mathematics or statistics in other disciplines. In addition, there are courses for those who have a general interest in these subjects.

York University students may earn an Advanced Certificate in Hebrew and Jewish Studies concurrent with fulfillment of the requirements for a bachelor’s degree. This certificate is also open to students who already hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and who are admissible according to Faculty and University policies. This certificate is not, however, open to students who are pursuing or who already hold a degree in Hebrew and Jewish studies.

The interdisciplinary program in African Studies provides students with the opportunity to pursue their interest in Africa in conjunction with another discipline.

Students will learn about the history of and perspectives on the language and the signing community in Canada with which thousands of Deaf and hearing people are associated.

Anthropology concentrates on change in the contemporary world, especially in relation to new and emerging social challenges.

The Department of Languages, Literatures and Linguistics does not offer a degree program or certificate but does offer courses in Arabic, language and culture.

The Cross-Disciplinary Bergeron Entrepreneurs in Science & Technology (BEST) Certificate integrates technology, law and business into creative problem-solving and innovation and is designed to teach, promote, focus and recognize student entrepreneurial skills and knowledge.

Biochemistry is the study of the structure, properties and reactions of biological molecules, including their interactions with other molecules within organisms.

Biophysics is an interdisciplinary frontier of science in which the principles and techniques of physics are applied to study living things and how they work.

Schulich’s undergraduate Bachelor of Business Administration programs – the BBA and iBBA – offer students a challenging and rewarding full-time course of study. Schulich students develop critical thinking and analytical skills while establishing a solid foundation in business concepts. Further, an undergraduate education at Schulich provides students with countless opportunities to grow and develop their soft skills.

The Business and Society (BUSO) program is an interdisciplinary liberal arts degree program which provides students with the tools needed to study the relationship between business, the economy and society.

Business Economics integrates aspects of economics and business studies, focusing on the use of economic analysis and statistical methods to deal effectively with management problems in practical business fields.

The Honours Minor program described may be combined with any approved non-business Honours program that offers a major/minor option in the Faculties of Environmental Studies, Health, Liberal Arts and Professional Studies, Science or the Lassonde School of Engineering. Students cover the basics building blocks (management, statistics for business, economics, accounting, marketing and finance) and then add three courses to be selected from a list of more than twenty courses in the most diverse fields of business education.

The program has three areas of focus. Canada: Time and Place explores interdisciplinary and international issues such as Canadian Aboriginal history and the immigrant experience.

Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing is offered by the Faculties of Environmental Studies, Liberal Arts and Professional Studies and the Lassonde School of Engineering.

The Certificate in Meteorology is a one-year (Fall/Winter) certificate designed to provide specialized education in atmospheric processes to those students who have already completed a university degree in physical science or applied mathematics, thereby preparing them for careers in atmospheric science.

The Certificate in Professional Writing in French, offered by the Department of French Studies, consists in a progressive training in all aspects of writing: grammatical and lexical correctness, stylistic adequacy and variety, genres and practices in public and professional writing, computational writing tools and document design, written communication effectiveness. The certificate aims at training versatile professional writers, who will have an extensive understanding of the way professional written communication works and will create documents addressing reader’s needs and expectations.

This program is certified (accredited) by TESL Ontario.

This program will provide (1) an understanding of how the English language works to convey meanings of different kinds and to respond to different needs; (2) an ability to write effectively and revise the writing of others in a professional and technical setting and; (3) the skills to work as a technical and professional writer and act as a language consultant.

The Department of Languages, Literatures and Linguistics offers a certificate of language proficiency and courses in Japanese. Students may also pursue a minor degree program in Japanese Studies.

The Children’s Studies program explores the experiences of children and adult constructions of childhood throughout time and across cultures.

Civil Engineering is perhaps the most diverse discipline in terms of its scope and application and has a profound impact on society and quality of life. It also plays a huge role in the development of mineral and energy sources and in protecting our natural and built environment. The undergraduate program in Civil Engineering at Lassonde encompasses designing, building and maintaining infrastructure, foundation design, natural hazards, water and sewage treatment, waste management systems and environmental site assessments.

The Classical Studies program offers a broad range of exciting courses in Greek and Roman history, Greek and Roman literature and culture, Greek and Roman art and architecture, Greek philosophy, and in Greek and Latin language.

The completion of a Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree provides the qualifications to teach in one teaching panel (Primary-Junior, Junior-Intermediate or Intermediate-Senior) in schools, including certification with the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT). The program is offered in Direct-Entry, Concurrent and Consecutive delivery models.

The Bachelor of Education (BEd) Technological Education is also offered to those who would like to become teachers of Technological Education at the Intermediate-Senior (grades 9-12) level.

German Studies is an interdisciplinary program. Our courses explore German culture from a wide range of perspectives including language, literature, film, intellectual and cultural history, urban studies, museum studies, and women’s studies.

York’s Global Health degree (BA and BSc), in the Faculty of Health, examines global health challenges including chronic and communicable diseases and many related issues such as wealth disparity, environmental degradation, government policy and human rights with a focus on preparing the next generation of health leaders with the knowledge and skills to improve health for people worldwide.

In the Health Informatics program, students take courses in the collection, management and analysis of health information, the design, implementation and maintenance of health information systems, and the evaluation of health information and communication technologies.

The Interdisciplinary Social Science degree program (ISS), offered by the Department of Social Science, provides students with a solid grounding in interdisciplinary social science research methods and critical social theory.

The iBSc and iBA degree programs are structured to build on the established strengths of the Honours programs by including a mandatory period of study abroad. The program requires students to acquire an international language and to gain international experience on exchange at one of York University’s partner institutions abroad.

Jamaican Creole is an English-based language with influences from West Africa.  It developed in the 17th century and today it is spoken primarily by speakers living in Jamaica and in places around the world to which Jamaicans have moved.

Latin was the language spoken and written by the ancient Romans from before Rome became a dominant power in the Mediterranean in the third century BC until after the fall of Rome in the fifth century AD. The Law and Society program is an undergraduate, interdisciplinary Honours program that examines law in its broader social and cultural context. It is one of the oldest and largest such legal studies programs in North America.

Linguistics is the scientific study of natural language organization. It concerns itself with discovering the universal principles of human language and applying these principles to provide systematic descriptions of individual languages. To this purpose, linguists investigate sound and word patterns, sentence structure, language usage and change, the acquisition of first and second languages, as well as the relationship between language and the mind and language and society.

The Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Post-Baccalaureate Diploma is open to teachers who are certified by the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT). Those who successfully complete this program — which is offered full-time over one year or part-time over three years — are recommended for the qualification, “Teaching Students Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing”, with a specialization in either ASL/LSQ Communication, or Oral/Aural Communication to the OCT. The program is accredited by the Ontario College of Teachers and by the Canadian Association of Educators of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (CAEDHH).

York’s Department of Theatre, with 22 full-time faculty members teaching more than 50 half- or full-year courses for majors, is the largest theatre department in Eastern Canada. Because of the department’s location in Metropolitan Toronto, students have access to Canada’s biggest concentration of English-language professional theatre companies and artists.
