Prevention of violent extremism in the Sahel-Sahara: the 3rd Regional Conversations Sunday and Monday in Algiers.
ALGIERS – The 3rd edition of “Regional Conversations for the Prevention of Violent Extremism in the Sahelo-Saharan Region” will be held next Sunday and Monday in Algiers, says the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE).
The meeting, under the theme “Investing in peace and preventing violence in the Sahelo-Saharan region”, will be organized, with the support of Algeria, the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), the International Peace Institute (IPI), the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs of Switzerland (FDFA) and the African Union Center for Studies and Research on Terrorism of the African Union ( CAERT), specifies the same source.
The opening ceremony will be chaired by Foreign Minister Abdelkader Messahel, in the presence of the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS).
Some 60 participants are expected to attend these conversations, from the Sahel-Sahara region (North Africa, West Africa and Central Africa), the organizers said, citing political and parliamentary leaders, representatives of civil society ( women’s and youth organizations), religious and traditional leaders, researchers, representatives of the defense and security forces, the media (in their expert capacities), as well as governments and regional and international organizations .
The initiative of “Regional Conversations for the Prevention of Violent Extremism” aims to create an “area of appropriation of the approach to violence prevention in the Sahel-Saharan space”, says the MAE.
“Investing in peace and violence prevention through dialogue and inclusion, building bridges between actors from diverse professional backgrounds, consolidating a better shared understanding of the complexity of the phenomenon, are the red threads of this initiative, which also contributes, in a very concrete way, to share and federate existing prevention initiatives and to stimulate the emergence of new actions that reinforce the factors of cohesion and peace at local, national and regional level, “he added.
The “Regional Conversations for the Prevention of Violent Extremism” were initiated as part of the implementation of the UN Secretary-General’s Plan of Action for the Prevention of Violent Extremism, which emphasizes the need for take a more comprehensive approach, which includes not only essential security-related counter-terrorism measures, but also systematic prevention measures that directly address the root causes of violent extremism “, it is recalled.
Likewise, he continues, with reference to the United Nations General Assembly resolution (1 July 2016) which “recognized the importance of this preventive approach”.
The 1st and 2nd editions of the “Regional Conversations” took place respectively in Dakar (Senegal) in 2016 and in N’Djamena (Chad) in 2017, after which “the four partners, with the support of Algeria , have engaged in the organization of this 3rd edition “.
